    DC Music - Comments?

    Hi All,

    Just recently re-did the site for my music teacher. Please let me know what you think good or bad. Any suggestions or room for improvement are welcome.

    http://www.dcmusic.ca.gs

    P.S. It uses javascript to detect your browser size on the homepage - please let me know if you experience any errors.

    Thanks!

    I like the style quite a bit...

    • the footer text a lil difficult to read

    • the content looks like it's separated from the rest of the design - I don't really know how to explain what I mean except maybe it needs a different bg color than the rest of the body

    • there are spaces between the menu items and between the top and bottom of the header - I don't know if that was intentional

    • there are 14 errors, beginning with no doctype

    • I went through your links and then when I clicked back on the "home" link it gave me a download dialog?

    • I would like to assume that the sheet music that you are offering is licensed or whatever - see lots and lots of stuff about sheet music that shouldn't be made available - matter of fact I believe one of forum users has a link about it in his signature

    I think you're off to a great start - keep up the good work!

    Alrighty then - thanks for the input......

    -about the errors, they mostly come from the redirector service I use because the site itself never even uses the frameset tag
    -I checked through the links and their "src" and none of them led to a download dialog, not sure what happened in your instance
    -the sheet music is all ok
    -the spaces in the nav are really weird.... they only show up in certain browsers and with certain screen resolutions,I am not really sure why it is happening but it is no huge big deal
    -the bg color for the main text area could be changed but originally when I did have it a different colour it really did look out of place because it was square

    But thanks for all the input, I realy appreciated it! Any other comments welcome.

    I'm suprised at how well you managed to pull of the splash image for the website. Splash pages are generally a relic from nostalgic website design, but like I said, you managed to pull it off quite well. Nice one. I hope you don't mind me suggesting the following points, I think they will make your website quite a bit better.

    1) The text on your navigation buttons is in the form of an image. This wreaks absolute havok on website usability. For me, those little buttons are way too small for me to read. I cannot increase the text size of the images like I would for normal text, because they are images. This is advised against by the W3C. You would do well to follow their advice on this matter.

    2) The navigation buttons, the header and the footer all have the same background image. This makes it a little difficult to distinguish between all three. You might think about making the background image of the header lighter/darker.

    3) The main body text looks like Times New Roman or something like that in my browser. I'm sure you didn't actually intend for Times New Roman, but because I don't have the font that you specified, I am left with it as default. I suggest you ammend your CSS to look something like this:

    Code:
    body {
        font-family: Verdana, Ariel, Sans-Seif;
    }
    The last font, "Sans-Serif" is a generic font that describes the style that Verdana and Ariel both use. It will cause the browser to use the nearest alternitive if no other fonts can be used.

    I hope these hints help.

    Well then! Thanks for the feedback! It's so much easier to design and edit a site when you know what people think. Now as for your suggestions....

    -Not sure exactly what a splash image is, but I was pretty shocked with how well the site turned out myself! Seing as I just used div id's and background images for the most part.

    -For the navigation... I was originally planning on making a background with text overtop of it but with text you can't get the rollover effects that I wanted, and if its too terribly small you can always use the browsers zoom feature, although it does blur it :S

    -The colors of the header, footer, and nav.... thats an interesting suggestion, I never even thought of that. I will change the colours a bit when I get a chance.

    -As for the text, already fixed!

    And yes thanks, it helped plenty!
