Smile explanation for Embedded Linux

I was wondering if anyone had a (non geek speek) explanation for Embedded Linux?

Basically I am looking for work ATM, and this job is local to me. But I was wondering what this 'embedded linux' is? It keeps cropping up.

Any thoughts?

Quote:
Software Engineer- Ayshire- C, C++, Unix, Linux, Embedded.
To develop, test and prove software for existing and new products in accordance with the programmes set out by the Product Engineering Manager. The postholder will be responsible for all aspects of software development for new product development projects and improvement to existing products, from overall design, detailed coding, and documentation within the constraints of the agreed project plan.
The ideal candidate will have a degree in engineering or similar numeric discipline and have 3 years academic or industry experience involving coding in C/C++, with at least 1 year of experience coding for Embedded Linux or Linux Device Drivers. Also essential is knowledge of Real-time programming and knowledge of the embedded Linux.
Cheers.

Well I can speak on that since embedded software engineering is what I do for a living. I think the person who wrote that description didn't really know what it is. Embedded software is simply software that works on a platform that is customized to run that specific application. So essentially the software is embedded into that platform and that O/S has been customized to run that specific application. So for example one of those new computerized cash registers could be considered embedded. In my job I work on jet fighter simulators. Considering that they are looking for someone with Real-time programming skills I am kind of surprised that they would be running it on linux. Linux is not considered a RTOS (Real Time Operating System) although there might be one distro that has been designed as a RTOS. We use VxWorks which is a common RTOS.
