Connection mysql with the new PHP 5.2

I can´t connect the new mysql with the php 5.2 with apache 1.3
I think I do the right steps as the page: http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.mysql.php

Do you have any idea what can be??

what steps have you taken so far?
do you receive an error?
do you have the mysql extension loaded from your php.ini? (may not be applicapble)
is this on OS X, windows or *nix?
