Script individual autogenerated reference no

could somebody help me to write a script for an individual autogenerated reference no. for an online shop?

How do you propose to avoid having two people with the same reference number or doesn't that matter? If it does matter then you need a server side solution as Javascript has no way of telling what reference numbers are already taken.
