yahoo like message alert

hi all
we are working in a network environment and we are using a private messaging system which we have developed in PHP/MYSQL.
is it possible that if a user logs in and if he has some unread messages in his inbox then a yahoo like message alert will be displayed like u have received three or four new messages.
