Your Thoughts and Comments, Please

Hi everyone, I am posting this because I hope someone will take a moment to critique my website, http://www.robowhizards.com. I had put this site up once before for review, but that was when it was a lot different, and didn't work in every browser. In its current state, it is not standard complient, but it is close to being that, and I hope to keep working on it to bring it up to standards. (This means you don't have to waste your time running it through the validator to tell me it isnt complient)

Sincerely, Dan

Thanks! By "layout: needs work", what exactly do you mean? (I'm not disagreeing with you; I am just trying to hone in on exactly what you mean)

Sincerely, Dan

The color scheme is something that could be worked with, but the layout is missing: a nice looking navigation, attractive imagery for the header (like incorporating a robot in the main topheader), the grey background does not go with purple and yellow. The tables are not styled, there is no practical use of CSS here. The links http://www.robowhizards.com/?content=4 dont help search engines, 4 should point to a textual content eg our-robots -> http://www.robowhizards.com/?section=our-robots, the gradient makes a faux 3d look, needs adjusting. The favicon needs to be a png, it has dirty pixels (giving a carved look). The text and headers and images need some extra padding. The login should be placed somewhere near the top of the page, now it is hidden. The intro is very nice but needs centering perhaps also needs to be more connected to the welcome page - eg use the same imagery for the mainheader ? Also skip intro and replay intro (has nothing to do with the site nav -> better add a link to main site that opens the intro if anyone needs seeing it again) Need any help?
It should not be a robots robots site but it could be nice using what you have ...

Thanks so much for all your input! I see what you mean about the grey not working with the yellow and blue (its actually #000066), I was also thinking about putting some sort of drop shadow on the page part so it looks like it is floating off the background. As far as the favicon, I agree with you. I just put that together in paint, and it should be spiffed up a bit.. I also agree that the intro isnt connected with the rest of the site, and I was thinking maybe I could put the intro on a page like the others, so it had the header and footer that all the others do, and instead of content in the middle, there would be the intro. The page does look a little crowded, maybe if I gave a little more space to everything, it would be a little better.

I am not sure what you mean by "a robots robots" site. (Sorry if i am missing something obvious)

Which tables do you mean arent styled?

and where is there no practical use of CSS? on the whole site? on the aforementioned tables? somewhere else?

It should not be a robots robots site but it could be nice using what you have ... -> meaning you dont have to make the robots crawl all over the place otherwise it would overemphasize the robot theme ...

The tables need color schemes and borders -> use CSS for that one

eg Competition Level Teams Date Location Directions
eg Awards and Competitions

I will post an example:

I will do the favicon if you like ... and post it as an attachment

Now I understand what you mean about a "robot robot" site. I agree with you on that. My goal for this site has always been to make it as professional as possible. (This is not a site I am being paid for- I am a member of the robotics club, and de facto webmaster for about three years) This has meant avoiding all "Your age in dog years"-type scripts. If you want to do the favicon, why not?
(Attached is a image of the hat you can work with if you want)

Also, I was thinking of adding a thin black border line for the tables.

about the favicon -> no time for that: should never be a jpg before converting to .ico -> bad quality

Thanks for your time! I will make a favicon now.

I will keep in consideration all the things you pointed out, as well as working to make the site standards-complient.

nice site, good content you have some or at least one misspelled words.
Code:
The ROBOWhizards held an Open House at the Marple Library on Saturday, with the goal of sprerading the word about FLL to many in Delaware County. At the Open House, several

Float image to left?

In your Our Robots section, you have the image then content, I think you should allow the content to wrap around the image. You can do this by floating the image to the left and not set a left margin on the content. You don't even need a table for the image and content.
