sharing files within network

hello there!

i have a dsl-connection together with my neighbour. me lan, he wlan.
we wanted to exchange files internally. i thought the best way would be to set up a shared folder. the thing is: we can not even see each other's pc in the "network places".

does anyone know how i need to set-up both pcs so that works?

i have win98 and he has xp.

To see both computers in my network places under workgroups or whatever, you need to have the computers in the same workgroups as well as making sure your firewall is allowing the other computer access to it and vice versa.
BTW Windows 98 is one of the worst versions of Windows to network, IMO.

you're quite right weazel. matter of fact, win98 ist a piece of ... as a whole, but i don't have any other choice right now :-/
anyway...

in the tcp/ip settings, there are 2 check boxes:
- client for microsoft networks
- microsoft family logon

are those relevant for the file sharing issue?
if yes, which setting?
if no, what are they good for?

if i select one of those, i get a login screen when booting my pc, asking me for an inexisting password and prompting me afterwards an error message that there is no domain or server to respond blablabla ...


as far as the workgroup is concerned: i just need to pick any name i want as long as it's the same for both computers, right?

yeah as for the workgroup it can be any name as long as both computers have the same one. I usually stick to "MSHOME" or "WORKGROUP" when I'm networking home machines. you need to set IP addresses for both computers via the TCP/IP panel in your lan adaptor card's properties - it should be under the "client for Microsoft networks" etc...Win98 might not have it tho. Once you've got access to the other computer, you need to share a drive on your hard disk.
