bradeck is an unknown quantity at this point
x-small vs. 12pt

When I use 12pt for a font size, IE6 and FireFox render my fonts exactly the same. When I change it to x-small, IE6 renders at 12pt and FireFox seems to render at around 10px. Any thoughts on how to deal with this difference? I want to use the more generic sizing for browser accessibility reasons but do not want the inconsistency.

Nothing you can do about the inconsistency. The x-small is going by the default font-size of the browser.
