Asus A7V400-MX

I'm thinking about building a budget PC system for around £150. I've been interested in this motherboard, however I'm not too sure about it's support for Sempron Processors. As this is a Socket A board, I should be able to get almost any Sempron processor with a 333mhz FSB (front side bus) and use it with this board. Am I correct in thinking this and do you think that this board is decent for the money?

I know it supports Athlon processors but it should also support Semprons given the fact that a Socket A Sempron is the socket and has similar/same processor architecture, but I'm still not too sure about getting a Sempron CPU with this board. Asus' website isn't very helpful, but I have heard of a few people on teh 'net which have used a Sempron chip with this board.

I built 2 Sempron PC's at school the other day on my work experience however I can't remember the model of the Asus board I was given to use

Jamie.

its a decent motherboard - personally i'd be looking for a bit more for £35 - but it's not bad. You could maybe save yourself £5-£10 if you searched around a bit on e-bay for one that meets your criteria. (Just remember to buy from a power seller who will give you a warranty)

If its the same socket size I cant see any reason why it wont work. All the silicon will probably be connected the same way on the chip so....

£150 is really tight budget, even for a budget computer. are there any parts you have lying around to recycle?

Yeah, I'm keeping the cd-rw, 2 hard disks, Zorro Gaming case and 19" monitor as well as graphics card from my last custom build - I'm just in need of a new mobo, cpu and gig of ram. The last board has packed up so I'm replacing the whole lot as the old board took PC133 ram and had a 1ghz athlon in it, so I want to replace the whole lot with a faster more stable base.

So far I've decided on:

1GB PC2700/PC3200 RAM
Sempron 2800+
but I can't choose a Mobo - I don't need SATA etc as I don't have sata hdds etc...I've been looking at that board as well as the Asus A7V8X-X and Abit KV7.

Yeah I'm going to purchase an Asus A7V400-MX as I've just built 5 systems at school with that board and it installs really easily without problem

Question

I hope someone will help me. Im a new builder, and I am having problems with my system. Let me explain. I have an Asus A7V400-MX motherboard and a AMD Athlon XP 2700+. I updated the bios to the newest version and I am aware of the jumper settings being printed wrong in the manual. The jumpers are set to 100mhz and it works fine. If I set it to 133mhz, the fans kick on but nothing else happens. If I set to 166mhz, which is what it is supposed to be set to, it works fine but the processor is read at 1300mhz. (thats 100mhz jumper settings) The only DRAM Clock option in the BIOS is By SPD or 133mhz. 166mhz was in there once, but it is not anymore. I don't know what's wrong.

Well I installed an A7V400-MX with an Athlon XP 2800+ and it works fine..runs at 2.0.7ghz. I used the original BIOS that the board came with and didn't bother upgrading.
Tell me, when you set the FSB to 166mhz you're putting the first dip switch down and the rest up yes?

I put the first switch down and the rest up and ive tried the reverse of that because somewhere asus printed them backwards. so ive tried both
off on on on on and
on off off off off

But I dont have the option to change anything in the bios to 166. only 133 and By SPD. What do you think?

Does anyone else have any thoughts? All I can say is it might be a bad board. Something is definitely weird here.
