I have a tiny HD installed so I thought I'd buy another to backup. The problem is, I've compressed the first. Now, I've been told to uncompress the first before backing up and my computer wants me to drop 150 mb of data in order uncompress. My questions are:
1) If I put folders worth 150 mb on the web temporarily, are these compressed?
2) How about if my second HD is larger?
3) Is there a better way to configure this?
Please don't tell me to go out and buy another computer as someone has already lamely mentioned....or a cd-r or rw or external as I already have the second HD.

What I'm needing to know is whether these are compressed when I upload them temporarily to the internet and need to be somehow uncompressed when downloading back.
There's some confusion on just what is really compressed. I don't mean compressed like in a zip file...I mean compressed as in HD. For example, I used Win98SE's Drivespace3 and compressed my HD once. Now I've been told to first uncompress when installing the 2nd HD. I'm thinking that this is different than a regular zip compression whereas the HD actually gets compressed because all my files are easily uploaded to the internet )audio, animated gifs) and perform fine. Apples and oranges...
Another issue is just why does it want 150mb to uncompress? I know for a fact I didn't add 150mb of crud once I compressed my HD. It must need extra space to decompress.

But no, when you move them from your computer, they automatically
uncompress, because it's the hard drive that's compressed.
What the CP does is create a virtual Drive, where information
about the compression is stored, and it's all write protected (no
delete). It's basically like the zip files in that it searches for patterns
and stores the information about the files.
The reason I find it a pain though, is that if you have a lot of files
that don't compress well, you end up taking more space because
of the virtual drive. But that was way back when Windows 95 was
the new kid.

PS. speaking of virtual drives, if you modify the autoexec.bat, you
can create a virtual drive linked to any folder of your choice using
the SUBST [vdrivename:] [drive: path] command
PSS. that is just a symlink though, if you delete the folder, the
vdrive goes too.
That's what I was thinking...The HD is compressed...not the files (basically).
I've also just read where compressing the HD is tricky and it's made into one huge file (E:host for C). If any file gets corrupted on E, the whole thing goes...not just the file.
So, with HD prices these days, compressing it is definitely NOT RECOMMENDED.

I think I tried deleting the drive once (when I was about three feet
tall), if I remember correctly, you can't delete it because
the system has it write protected, but don't try.
I still remember the days when I had a 110mb hard drive running on a Windows 3.1 OS... oh the troubles I had.
Oh and installing Microsoft Office 6.1 I think off 27 floppy disks...
But I never used to use DriveSpace... its a hassle. Can't you just copy and paste all the data on your primary 1??mb hard drive onto your second one? That should be simple shouldn't it?
I mean it is possible to do it even in windows 3.1 or MS DOS.
Then you can fork out a fiver and buy yourself a 4 gig hard drive, or if you can spare about 50 quid, a 40 gig or a 60 gig drive...
Well, I've moved beyond that problem and have successfully uncompressed my C. I've installed D but can't copy the OS over to it so I can switch master/slave HD's. It won't copy Win386.swp file that manages the virtual memory...so I get an 'disk error: File in use'. I've tried several copying programs but they haven't worked completely. I've even gone into DOS and tried XCOPY C:\Windows\Win386.swp D:\WINDOWS...resulting in another 'File in use' error. Major prob is I don't have the OS disk and backup can't find qic117.vxd even though I've inserted it into 7 directories. I'm now thinking of using a file sharing program and just putting the OS into D that way. At least I can also reinstall the backup which is supposed to be the best method for this...or Norton GHO$T.

Are you trying to copy the swap file while windows is running? If so, boot your machine into DOS only. I think that the windows swap file is onyl used while windows is actually running!
BTW: I'm not 100% convinced that you need to copy this file! I think that windows will create it if it is missing!
I've restarted my comp in DOS...but when I try to copy that file, it says it's an invalid drive (D)...but D shows up in the BIOS.
I'm "simply" trying to copy everything including the OS to D so I can switch the HD's and make D the master and C the slave.
I've been reading up on this for days now...and it's not a "simple" thing to do by any means. As you can see...you "simply" can't copy fil;es over. It just doesn't work that way.
When I switch D as the master and C as the slave, it won't boot. This is the only file missing.
I may have to erase all on D...then install Win98SE...then copy all other files over.
