display:none visibility:hidden prevent image load

Does display:none or visibility:hidden prevent the image from being loaded when the page and its components are being loaded. For example, in the status bar of IE... you can see the different components that are being loaded. If I have an image and it has any of the properties specified above in its style attribute... will the browser still load it?

I think (and I'm sure I will be proven wrong here in a sec ) that Netscape 6.x is the only browser that won't load the image...

Well, what's the issue at hand? If a browser quirk can kill the layout there might be an alternative to using display:none...
