Making maps for the net

Heck, thought I'd start using this section as well. Question lies in Image Maps for the net (ala, they type you find advertised on Microsoft.net's main page, and a yahoo service etc.)

Anyone know how to make them and go about them? What would be the best system to get the closest route? Dijkstra's Theory?

Hm. AFAIK, you use the <map> and <area> elements of HTML, with an underlying image.

Yes, exactly like mapquest. Anyone attempted making such maps from scratch? Or know how to go about it?

this is not an advertisement, mod it if you need to.
on http://www.multimap.com they are hiring people and it shows what there requirements are like Mysql programming etc. so it gives it away a little of how they work.
