A set of new products from Apple have just been revealed. All of them aim, in difference to Apple's traditional lineup, at the low end of the market. iPod Shuffle is a small, display-less music player which carries 512 MiB or 1 GiB storage space, coming in at USD 99 and USD 149 respectively. The Mac mini is a small and quiet "headless" Mac, aimed at users considering a switch to Linux or Mac, users inspired to search out other Apple products by the popular iPod, or people that want a small portable computer but not a laptop. It comes in at USD 499 and USD 599 respectively for the 1.25GHz/40GB and 1.42GHz/80GB versions.

these mac minis look good. des anyone know how they compare to a bottom of the line PCs? how about for web design work? how do they fare up? (in particular photoshop?) i need a mac user to decrypt all this for me *cough* error 404?

The new Mac Mini Pc's will still out perform a bottom-of-the-line pc by todays standards. As for Photoshop, it would still run perfectly in performance terms..but do you know the max. resolution of the displays, as photoshop likes a high resolution...
Also in Photoshop terms it runs best with over 256mb ram...1GB or more is ideal if you want to run the whole creative suite plus more apps. at the same time.
Edit...the Mac Mini doesn't come with a monitor, but I find that on my Mac Photoshop CS likes a screen resolution of 1024x768 or above. However, it still runs comfortably at 800x600..but why would anyone on earth want to use that screen res.?
According to MacWorld.com Apple are also releasing the successor of AppleWorks - iWorks as well as several other products.
Well, yes, but those are only extensions or upgrades of current products. Given they had the aging AppleWorks and then released a separate Keynote, it was inevitable that they would aim at an entire office suit. Expect equivalents to Excel and maybe the other, less used components of Microsoft Office in due time.

The Velocity Engine makes Photoshop CS absolutely fly, although you'll probably want to max out RAM to 1GB, of third party RAM, as Apple massively overcharges... As for web editing, I personally use SubEthaEdit (I really don't like BBedit's proprietary colour highlighting )...
For those who want to know exact dates, AppleWorks 6 started shipping on 16th August 2000, and iWork will start shipping on the 22nd January 2005, making it exactly 1620 days old, or at least when iWork starts shipping...
