witchkraftracing.com Review

Hello All,

If you don't mind, I'd appreciate any comments about a site redesign I recently did:

www.witchkraftracing.com

I originally had a similar layout done completely in tables. It was a mess and moving it to CSS-based cut the file sizes in half and made the entire site much cleaner in my opinion.

The main thing I think could be possibly improved is the top navigation. I wanted to keep it text-based, but I think something can still be added to jazz it up a little.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

Great site!

Your right, the top navigation is pretty bland.

What about moving it just above or below your header image so that it doesn't feel like it's floating off into space.

Also, you might rework to colors to tie it into the predominate colors in some of the graphics. The current link color is good, but your hover color is a poor choice I think. I would make the link color the same grey as the box background of the image featured_k2k.gif and the hover the current orange color. Maybe also add a 3 px border-bottom in grey for the hover as well, similar to mozilla's nav in the top right corner.

Otherwise, you've done a great job!

Cheers,
Simon

Thanks for the feedback Simon. I like your suggestion of the link color change. Check out the site again, as I made the change and I do like it better.

For the 3 pixel border, are you talking about on all links, or the main navigation? I think it might look cool on the main nav .. maybe I'll try that ..

personally, I really like it as it as, and I think you shoudl leave the navigation how it is... it works very well with the current design.

Good job overall... Nice design and good to see you are using XHTML (and no tables for layout)... Well done!

I really like the over all design, but I have a few issues:

First, the navigation could easily be turned into an unordered list and then the logo displayed as a centered non-repeting background for that list. There would need to be some tweaking (i.e., the gap between the third and fourth nav item for the logo), but I do think it would improve the semantics.

Second, you've gone with restricted heights on some of the context "boxes." For example, the "third row" the text flows outside of the box after only one text size increase (I'm on mozilla, this wouldn't happen in IE of course). I can understand your desire for a pixel perfect layout (especially in this case where you wish for the content box to be the same size as the image to the left), but some times there needs to be a little sacrificing. Other than that top box, I see no reason to why you would need fixed height boxes anywhere else.

Third, once you get to the main content area, you've used paragraphs to styling everything. Interesting enough, you've given some of your paragraphs classes such as "newsHeader". Why not use an actually heading tag here as would be most appropriate. For instace, the date could be enclosed in <h3> tags while the heading could be enclosed in <h2> tags. This would make the code much easier to update and much simpler. Now you can just use flat out <hn> tags and <p> tags and not worry about extraneous classes.

Other than that, that's about all I got. Very nice looking site overall, just a few tweaks under the hood would make it really great!

I think the design looks really clean and professional, I'd leave it as is. The menu is a little bland -- it would add more to emphasize on the tribal and integrate that into your text based buttons (extend the cuts of the tribal and have them weave up and out to the extending page in different shades of black/grey) - ore maybe just make that whole top section a color with CSS rollovers -- or a custom image faded in that backdrop. The top picture has some ugly typography for the witchkraft words -- that's a very basic 90's font, looks more like a kids scratch than speeding text -- check out http://www.acidfonts.com for some custom text -- I think the other typography is A quality, and the grey white look is sweet. Great job!

On a side note, your alternating image shifts on my Safari:
