Google to introduce free email?

Just browsing slashdot and found this ... It seems that google is making itself an even bigger player .. I'd like to see it go even further and take away MSN traffic.

Is that official? Cause that was said about Google about a year ago as well, and it didn't happen. Of course, there were those rumors about Microsoft putting a bid on Google at the time as well...

As for the email service, think about it:
- Targetted advertising based on email contents, in POP3, IMAP and web mail
- Effective spam detection, both outgoing and incoming. (They are the best in semantic algorithms, after all...)
- Google's tradition of keeping to the rule - KISS

Of course, there's no official word from Google about it. They registred googlemail.com in 2001, so it might be either a longtime plan, or merely a try at preventing somebody else to use their good name for a mail service.

Yes there is official word.

Of both e-mail and going public.

You should read more stuff about google on their own websites

and learn the domain names of the public google SEO forums

There's nothing about starting an email service in the Google Press Center - Press Releases <http://www.google.com/press/pressreleases.html> from what I could find, and it's not appeared as a project in the Google Services & Tools <http://www.google.com/options/index.html> or a test project in Google Labs <http://labs.google.com/> either.

I couldn't find anything about going public either, neither in the Press Releases nor in the Investor Information <http://www.google.com/press/investors.html>

Neither does the Google-Friends mailing list seem to have anything on either topic.

Well - I guess the word "official" is the key word.

CNN stated from google representatives that they were currently communicating with the head of the ...nasdaq I believe it was, about their plans to go public.

They same for the email system, where google reps stated on the news that they were "currently experimenting" with anti-spam systems and a new form of email service.

I think this is too alpha for even a lab section.

All they said was they were speaking to the heads about going public, and that they were researching technologies for email.

The impression I got was they are not going to have email as you and I know it. They won't do it unless it is a monumental step ahead of the current concept of email.

So CNN said that someone from Google said that this was happening ... that's hardly official word is it? News channels have claimed people said things that they never said before ... they probably never spoke directly to anyone at Google, but rather got their information from a third party - a journalist, or a news gathering service.

No offence mate, but you need to watch the surety of your tone. Be careful about speaking of things as definitely true when they're only probably or arguably true - of things as fact when they're only speculation.

But anyway, I have no information to go on, but my instinct tells me that both of these developments are quite likely - going public is a logical move for a company of Google's size, but they wouldn't do it just like that. My understanding is that companies generally go public because they want to raise money - so if Google had some major diversification plans in the pipeline, such as email, ISP or other such services, it would totally make sense.

Where are you getting your information? Ever since rumors of Google venturing into IPO territory I've been following the reports and can't find anything concrete. What I have been able to find is plenty of speculation... I wouldn't be surprised to see Google go IPO, but for now they're not talking. BTW also searched records of CNN and can't find any mention of an IPO there, either...

lol -- Couldn't have said it better!

I hope google does go public! I'm thinking about investing soon and I would definitely put most of my money into it for sure, they haven't really put a foot wrong business-wise as far as I'm aware. And this increased competiton ( or at least supposed competition ) would make the values of the winner's index soar. -- I'm tipping google to have the better technology of the next few years ..

I would like a google pop3 ... mainly because I don't like hotmail much, and I've got a lot more respect for google.

I am thinking that if they give you 1 gig of storage, that you can only have so many emails and/or the emails can only be so large in size...
