Problems starting with databases

Hi all, apologies in advance if this isnt the right forum to post this: it didn't quite seem to fit in the PHP or MySQL forums.

I've been asked to make a site that uses PHP with databases, and I use Windows XP. I have quite a small budget, so paying some £140 for MySQL didn't appeal to me, nor did the complex windows-unfriendly PostGreSQL system. I've been looking all over for a database system that is free (or at least relatively cheap) and PHP/Windows-friendly, and that is easy to download and install (sounds strange, but trying to download PostGreSQL was beyond me).

Can anyone give me any tips as to which programs they recommend and how they work?

Thanks a lot,

Fae

from http://www.mysql.com/products/licensing.html :

For those developing open source applications, the Open Source License allows you to offer your software under an open source / free software license to all who wish to use, modify, and distribute it freely. The Open Source License allows you to use the software at no charge under the condition that if you use MySQL in an application you redistribute, the complete source code for your application must be available and freely redistributable under reasonable conditions. MySQL AB bases its interpretation of the GPL on the Free Software Foundation's Frequently Asked Questions. For more information on MySQL's Open Source License, click here.
If you would be making a site, then i don't see why you should get some sort of commercial license ...

But i would recommend that you just pick a host that has PHP - mySQL installed. Like ithium.net where you can get a hostingplan starting from $10 a year, including (5) mySQL db's.
