Problems starting with databases

Hi all, apologies in advance if this isnt the right forum to post this: it didn't quite seem to fit in the PHP or MySQL forums.

I've been asked to make a site that uses PHP with databases, and I use Windows XP. I have quite a small budget, so paying some £140 for MySQL didn't appeal to me, nor did the complex windows-unfriendly PostGreSQL system. I've been looking all over for a database system that is free (or at least relatively cheap) and PHP/Windows-friendly, and that is easy to download and install (sounds strange, but trying to download PostGreSQL was beyond me).

Can anyone give me any tips as to which programs they recommend and how they work?

If you would be making a site, then i don't see why you should get some sort of commercial license ...

But i would recommend that you just pick a host that has PHP - mySQL installed. Like ithium.net where you can get a hostingplan starting from $10 a year, including (5) mySQL db's.

thanks for that raf. i'll honestly admit that i didnt scour through all of mysql's terms, just saw the word 'purchase', looked up the cost of mysql and got a bit worried. thanks again, ill go take a closer look.
