Question img tag disappears

I've been seeing a strange problem that looks like the web host server is removing an img tag from a web page. The host's tech support says it isn't possible for the server to do this. I saw it after trying to add a link with an icon. The code seems pretty simple:
Code:
<a href="http://validator.w3.org"><img src="images/valid-xhtml10.gif" alt="Valid XHTML 1.0!" height="31" width="88" /></a>
When my browser loads a page with this snippet in it, the link/image doesn't show up. If I look at the source in the browser, the entire img tag is missing! If I just change the width attribute to 89 or 87, everything is ok. Also if I just remove the width attribute, everything is ok. Am I going insane or just doing something stupid? I have an example of this here. I thought this might be a bug in Internet Explorer so I tried downloading the page listed above via GetRight and opening it in notepad. The img src tag was removed. If I download the page via ftp and open it locally, everything is correct.

Thanks for the help.

Sounds more like a caching problem to me, I see all the images fine.

Try this

Do you see just two images or all three?
This is a copy of the source dowloaded via ftp.
Code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">

<html>

<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />
<meta name="author" content="" />
<meta name="copyright" content="" />
<meta name="date" content="dy-mo-yr" />
<meta name="keywords" content="" />

<title></title>

</head>

<body>

<p>
<br>
There should be a link with an image below<br>
<a href="http://validator.w3.org"><img src="images/valid-xhtml10.gif"
	alt="Valid XHTML 1.0!" height="31" width="88" /></a><br>
but, <i>&ltimg src=&quotimages/valid-xhtml10.gif&quot alt=&quotValid XHTML 1.0!&quot height=&quot31&quot width=&quot88&quot /&gt</i>
is missing between <i>&lta href=&quothttp://validator.w3.org&quot&gt</i> and <i>&lt/a&gt</i>.<br>
<br>
</p>

<p>
<br>
It works if you change <i>width=&quot88&quot</i> to <i>width=&quot89&quot</i> as shown below<br>
<a href="http://validator.w3.org"><img src="images/valid-xhtml10.gif"
	alt="Valid XHTML 1.0!" height="31" width="89" /></a><br>
<br>
</p>

<p>
<br>
And it also works if you remove <i>width=&quot88&quot</i> as shown below<br>
<a href="http://validator.w3.org"><img src="images/valid-xhtml10.gif"
	alt="Valid XHTML 1.0!" height="31" /></a><br>
<br>
</p>

<p>
<br>
<b>This is very strange!<b>
<br>
</p>

</body>

</html>
If I look at the source code of what my browser "sees," the first img tag is completly removed. I tried the link you provided and tried to force a reload but I still just see two images.

Thanks.

Ok. It seems to be some problem on my pc with Norton Internet Securicty. If I disable it, clear the cache and reload the page then everything is fine. If I enable it, clear the cache and reload then I see the problem again. Weird.

Thanks.

...

Well if it is any comfort to you, I have the exact same problem. I thought I was going utterly mad. Is there any way of fixing this problem without requesting Norton to be turned off??

Ok there are a list of words that Norton search for (list can be obtained on the interweb) and once they find these words in a block, they remove all img tags. Likewise they check width and height and remove ad-like images by size ref alone. It seems a crazy stupid mad insane way of doing things. Strangely enough some sites escape this, the likes of disney, ebay, etc etc, big business look exempt from Nortons mad filtering rules!!

That's a great bit of detective work - thought I was going insane with the missing lines of code. Re-named the offending image files and web page looks like it should.

Where did you find the filtering word list? Can you change them in Norton?

I gave up utterly on Norton years ago but I'm still constantly amazed at the things it does that are either wrong or plain bad
