Angry Viri and mail gone bad

There's a new virus that spreads through email and kazaa around. It also spoofs mail delivery failure notices. Within an hour, I got 344 such mail delivery failure notices. Guess who's going to block every mail that doesn't come from an address in his address book for a while

Your best off using something like emule rather than the more widely known imesh and kazaa. Although they are not even 100% safe.

You need a completely seperate Internet connection and a pc that is not linked to anything else to be safe. Then just scan as you download and scan again at the very end of the download just incase the file is corrupt.

I hope you are not dowloading Copyrighted material

Oh, I'm not affected and I don't use use kazaa at all. I just described how it spread. The problem is that the virus collects email addresses, and spreads itself by spoofing mail from those senders. The affected email address has been used on some mailing lists, and it's likely that a few of the people on these mailing lists are affected. What I get is the mail delivery failure mails, which is even worse, since I've got about 20k of these now. Most of them send the original mail back, so the virus is spread through the mail delivery failure notices as well.

Sounds like mayhem - Is it the mydoom virus by any chance?

It could also be the Mimail virus which is new today and there is not alot of information regarding it. Keep up to date with - http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/anal...32mimailt.html

On my homepage I have the Sophos top 10 virus warnings. If you keep an eye on it you can add the patches before they have a chance to get to you.

Sounds like a strange one to me though as I'm sure you know how to secure your machine!!!

Heh, the mimail and mydoom viri are actual the same one, named differently by the different antivirus companies, as you can see in the "Also Known As" column at <http://securityresponse.symantec.com...doom.a@mm.html>

And yes, that was the virus I was talking about, though I didn't know the assigned names for it at the time I made the initial post.

As for making my computer secure, don't worry. Except for a Junkie boot sector virus on one of my current FAT partitions (can't remove it since I have no floppy drive and AVG requires a floppy boot to remove those, but it's not making any damage either) no virus infection has penetrated my systems since my old 286. And I actually got the Junkie virus because I ran a floppy image of an old game taken from my 286 computer.

(As a note, Novarg/MyDoom/MIMAIL exists in several different strains. They are not all the same, but the A strain is.)

The original Prince of Persia by Bullfrog, a nostalgia game that I thought I had lost until I realised my brother had a copy as well. It's a pretty good game for it's age.
