Popup Blocker Code being added without knowing

An individual that I help from time to time with scripting is finding some javascript being added to her HTML pages without her doing anything. Here is the code:

She statest that any page that she has created has this code included and can't uderstand how it is being added. I suggested that maybe she has some software running on her PC that could be doing it. She uses a combination of Hot Metal Pro 6 and notetab for creating her pages. Has anybody ever seen this before and if so could you shed some light on the subject. Thank you.

as justame said, she's probably getting the code pasted in there because her pages are hosted by a free server (Geocities, Angelfire, etc.)

They have all those pop-up scripts to show their advertising, which is what pays for your free hosting... it's a term of using the service that was most likely stated in ther Terms of Service agreement that you said "I Agree" without reading (Don't we all )

Hmm, tough one to call. Is this code being added to just the pages she creates (that's the way I read it)? Does this code appear before she uloads her pages, or only after? Have her look at her raw source before a page has been uploaded and see if it is there then.

Who is she hosted with? Adding a pop-up blocker code to pages hosted on a free host that requires their pop-ups to be visible would violate the TOS of the host. However, it almost looks like it might be code added after a page is uploaded (by the host). It's certainly generated by something.

Have her create a simple 'test' page in Hot Metal Pro, save it, then open it in notepad and see if the code has been added. Sort of like a process of elimination . Likewise, have her create a test page in notepad, upload it to her hosting space, and view the source to see if it is added after FTPing.

As far as I know she is not hosting with a free Web Host, in fact she uses two different ones. She also did save a HTML page that I created (did not have blocking code) using the save as option of the browser. When she opened it up it had the code. She did not say though if she opened it first in Hot Metal Pro or notetab. I will have her try your suggestions. Thank you for your help.

Interesting that the code showed up in a page you created when she saved it with her browser. What browser is she using? There is, of course, some software out there that blocks pop-up advertisements/windows, but I don't know if any of them accomplish this via altering the source code during the time the page is being parsed by the browser. Very strange .

Check if she is using a personal firewall that has ad blocking enabled, or privacy enabled/webbugs disabled...typically these types of programs add almost identical code to all pages a browser sees in order to comply with the firewall's settings.

She download a page using WS-FTP and checked it in Notetab only and the code was not in it. I suspect that it could be her Hot Metal Pro that is adding the code. She uses Zone Alarm as her firewall which is what I use and I have not had any problems with that. Thank you for all your suggestions, she is doing some more testing to try and narrow it down.

ZAP (Zone Alarm) does add that popup blocking code, and she may have the issue because she is blocking popups and perhaps you are not...

I can almost guarantee you that is the problem.

I give 100% certainity that current code is implemented by ZoneAlarm. Which is very good firewall, though for personal use.

You can decide whether to block pop-ups or not.
