you need to Change!

The search functions accepted paramaters. It keeps telling me I can't search because I don't use enough letters..that's kind crazy.

I'm only saying, change it so that the minimum search length can be 1 letter. I remember not being able to search for IP once.. I don't think I even bothered asking after that.

I have recently done a search for div, guess what..it wouldn't let me..:P

It's a pain to say the least and completely avoidable. I don't know that I speak for anyone else other than me myself and I , but just take it into consideration. It would really make this forum that much more user friendly, and people could actually search the forums without thinking that the error actually means no results have been found. Usually when I see a message like that, before even reading it I assume 'no results', hit my back button and try again.

It's a thought... just consider it.

I agree with you. But the minimum length should be 2 letters not 1 letter as you suggest.

Well it's vBulletin not UBB and yes I believe that is a changable setting. I believe WA set the minimum to 4 characters to help reduce server loads during searches. Unfortunately many things in web development and programming involve 3 letter words or phrases.

Hi glenn, sorry but I have to disagree. one letter imo would be best. How many people search by using a phrase.
"How to disable rightclick"
Or "getting IP"
Or "Using css to change links"

Fact is, people use phrases to search. Now, I don't personally, I like to make my searches a little more oriented and large

So, I don't know if phrases will work or not, if phrases will then I agree with you 100%. Otherwise it also becomes an issue.

But then again I don't mod this forum and don't know what kind of stress is put on it. So you may be better off by limiting searches a bit.

But yes, if you guys can atleast make the minimum 2 letters that would be great. Much easier and greatly improved. I myself thank you for that alone.

how on earth can someone get specific results with a one-letter-search-string, 3 letters would be better, i can live with 2. But 4 is indeed too much.

I didn't see a single-letter word in your search terms.
But I see your point. But then again, you can get better results with these search terms (granted 2-letter word is accepted).

"disable right click"
"detect IP"
"CSS change links"

So thinking of good search keywords is the key to get better results.

heh heh..
Geesh.. Yeah, I guess I didn't understand how the search worked.
I meant to at least provide a minimum of two letters to search with. Not one letter..

You're right one letter doesn't help much.

I was thinking that if set to two letters the search would see the two letter word and tell you it's not allowed. And so my reasoning behind setting it to 1 letter..

Thanks though for even considering the changes. I know it's not the biggest priority or that big of a deal, it's just something that always got to me when I wanted to search.

thanks

The wild cards are great for searching for terms like css and box and others adding the * at the end but it says that you can put a star at the front as below

Quote:
Advanced query: Join words with AND, OR and NOT to control your search in more detail.
Add asterisks (*) to use wild cards in your search (*bullet* matches vBulletin etc.)
But I noticed that you cant search for anything like this *ip* it says that its too small So I was wondering are wildcards only working after the word or.....?

That's just the way VB is coded...There would be a lot of load on the server for such broad searches
