Building website traffic

I have currently have 3 domains and one of those has a few subdomains as spin-off sites.. I realize niche sites are a hard sell overall, but I am trying to figure out the best coarse of action to build an audiance for my websites. And I realize there is no one sure fire solution.

As part of my hosting package through bluehost, Atracta SEO is one of the features and I have been utilizing that as it states it will help build a larger audience. The only thing increasing on most of the sites is the influx of spammers to the forum(s).

Back in the day (about 10-12 years ago) when I launched the first site, there was a pretty good following, due to a number of issues the site ended up offline for a while, and when I was able to get things in order and relaunch the site the original domain was in limbo so I purchase a new, but similar domain name. Once I was able to get the original domain sorted out I linked that to the new hosting account via masking, so when you type in http://www.myoringaldomain.org the address actually shows the new domain. I don't know at this point if it would have been better to have the original domain go to a seperate folder/page and state that the domain has changed with a link to the new domain.

I am trying to figure out a better way to promote my site on limited funds without going the spamming route...

Any advice?

You can use your .htaccess files to allow visitors to view your site with your old domain name instead of the new one. This maintains the original SEO you did with the old domain but it may have lost integrity over time so you may have to work at it again. If your old domain did better by you, however, I recommend having it available as well as the new one. If you point all traffic to one location, pick the one that works best for your current traffic and intention.

If your new domain gets crappy traffic, point that traffic to the old domain in the .htaccess file. But only build on one domain, don't try and build them both.

Good and original content and many and good backlinks are the two most important ways to get more traffic to a website.
