Hello I am getting use to this grid system but have once question? is a gutter padding?

I have done this grid system? 1200 wide for more modern computers as old ones will where out I have just done it to learn off. I made it my self but lot more tones of tweaking to do

How do I compensate the widths if I would like to add borders and paddings?

I just don't know how to compensate the width? If you know could you give me a idea on how do do it? I am learning
