Using Jabberd as a pm system

So, i am planning to develope or hire a developer for a social network in norway, and am thinking abut discussing the use of jabberd as a messaging system.

Anyone have used this with php earlier, to build a combined chat and messaging system?

I wonder, should i, or should i not go this way? i have the server capacity for everything, so nothing should be a problem.

Redcoder has a little shameless behaviour in the past
If XMPP and Jabber is good enough for Facebook and Gtalk, then Jabberd is good enough for you.

I thought the same thing. i knew facebook used it, but i was maybe looking for a bit more pro's and con's

If i estimate a userbase on about 50 000 users, will it need alot of serverpower ?
