moving from ASP to ASP.NET: your personnal experience.

Hi,

I'm still quite a beginner in ASP and I'm gonna study it for a while before moving to anything else... Though I have a question about .NET. It's a very simple question: I'm just wondering how much it's close to classic ASP. A better formulation of my question would be: when you know how to create sweet code with ASP, is it easy to move to .NET or is it a totally different world? I mean... I know the big lines that distinct ASP from ASP.NET but I would like to know how the people who switched to .NET lived this change and what was their level of experience when they switched.

I found it quite hard at first to make the move from asp to .net but after a while you will have wondered how you ever lived without it.

One thing that helped me loads was class browser (www.asp.net) because there are 1000s of classes (like components). The main reason to use .net is the classes because you can do things you wouldnt have been able to do in asp without a component. Things like sockets or dynamically creating images.

I just recently started switching.

I am quite experienced in ASP classic and I had been writing vb.net apps more in the past then asp.net, but now at work they decided any new stuff my team does will be in asp.net using C#.

I've done some VB asp.net work previously, there are somethings I have found challenging but I am sure if you were to move from VBScript ASP classic to vb.net ASP.net it wouldn't be as difficult as vbscript to C#.

However, I am starting to like the C# syntax better. You can kinda think of it as VB with Java syntax. Once you start to get the hang of it, like most things, gets easier.

I've had to do some pretty crazy things like maintain the same session states in ColdFusion, ASP, and ASP.net for the same website. It took some creative thinking. I got some asp.net links at work, I'll post them on monday.

Lastly, remember google, it is your friend....

I hated it at first, my company said that they wanted all new apps to be in asp.net.....In one month, I taught myself how to program in .NET very efficiently.

You just need to put in extra time at the beginning and you will save time later on durning development.

oracleguy - My one app. I look over is ColdFusion, ASP, ASP.net and I know how you feel. I am making this all in .Net now to save me from the headache.
