Just a quick post to ask you about your opinions and views about the develoment of all the CMS available (WP, Drupal, Joomla etc).
Dont you think that one day, they could be a threat for Web Dev jobs?
CMS technologies and communities are growing rapidly, so far Web Developers are still required to build complex Websites but what about tomorrow?
You single out CMS, but think about everything else out there. There are all kinds of custom object oriented scripts out there that handle a wide array of things. I never really thought web development could make a full time career. Especially when there are people out there willing to code for free.
Look at Linux, and all of the open source packages that go along with it. Linux is striving, and people still have jobs dealing with computer programming.'
Personally I am very thankful for all of the open source free code out there. I have an instructor who told me if there is a project out there I really like I should get involved with it and commit even the slightest contribution to help keep it going.
I am a huge fan of Word Press. just because a website is using wordpress doesn't mean that coders won't be needed. Word Press could need modifications, themes might need to be built, etc. There will always need to be someone to maintain these CM systems. Maybe less people now than in the past, but that is the case with all types of work.
If you're concerned about losing a job as a web developer hopefully you are skilled in computer programming languages, or at least basic networking.
I would hate to think of what the internet would be like without Word Press, PhpBB, and all of those other free content management system.
also existance of so many CMS's creates tons of so called web developers not knowing basic programming and those will always need coders for even most basic stuff. i'd say from programmer's perspective it's rather a good thing
I would agree with the posts above. As a lead recruiter currently looking for a front end engineer at eBay, there is definitely a need for, and shortage of, quality coders. Great companies need cutting edge sites, and are looking for people that can innovate from the ground up. Sure, CMS has opened up opportunities for people who aren't coding rockstars to enter the web dev field, but it has also emphasized the difference between good web developers and those who aren't, making my job a little easier.
A lot of small businesses that used to have only static webpages are moving to CMSes like Wordpress. This creates opportunity not only for web designers, but also for developers who will write custom scripts and translate designs into PHP/HTML code. In a way, the rise of CMSes is a mixed blessing. Probably more positive than bad. A lot of smaller businesses could never afford $100,000 for a custom programmed site. But they can afford $5,000 for a Wordpress-based site with some custom coding.
I never really thought web development could make a full time career. Especially when there are people out there willing to code for free.
This alone is laughable.
-----------
CMS are the reason for the BOOM of the internet. If anyone seriously thought things would remain like they were prior to Wordpress and other CMS, then they're crazy. CMS has brought millions of businesses to the internet that all, in some way shape or form, need or will need a custom solution down the road.
Perfect!
These big companies better learn just who the boss is, or else. How dare them!
When "the government" wants to create jobs, it will let us know.
