I took a chance.

It's just another feeble attempt at encrypting code.

He didn't show the complete code, so I didn't try to decrypt it. (It's hex encoded, but using some kind of offset or key in addition.)

One and a half statements assigning strings to variables.

Presumably the rest of the script would then do something with the variables if you were to add the end of the second assignment and whatever follows it.
