Results of the Eolas Lawsuite

Because of the Eolas lawsuite, Microsoft has changed the way IE works when it comes to embedded ActiveX objects created by the embed, object and applet elements. More about this on MSDN > Information for Developers about Changes to Internet Explorer and linked pages. See also articles by Apple and Macromedia regarding the subject. (Seems like the same article with the only changes lying in what plugin is used.)

I was about to post the same thing. Three cheers for Eolas!!! For the moz faithful this is their press release. I hope that this is not a sign of more things to come.

The patent:

I hope you aren't serious about cheering EOLAS on, they've just stolen from the web (not just MS, they only sued MS first since MS has more $ available) a simple and intuitive interface that never should have been granted a patent in the first place. Now you'll have to go to uneccesary lengths to provide the same user experience by introducing javascript code to write the exact same code you'd have placed directly in the page using html.

Patenting anything related to everyday web usage hurts everyone, hate or love MS there's nothing to cheer about here.

Yeah I was being sarcastic. I think it is ridiculous. They are just exploiting the patent system. It seems that patents may be the WMD of the internet. I go out of way to make applications easy to use and when things like this happen it just makes me mad. I am sure we will soon see pop-ups and spam that look identical to these "Ok" windows. It seems that some people care more about lining their pockets then making the internet a better place.

In my books, the US patent (copyright, trademark too) laws are seriously messed up. They are scewerd toward the good of the patent seekers, not the good of the community benefitting from the patented device. Thankfully, the EU parliament seems to have regained their sense and changed the union-wide patent law proposition to not allow patenting mathematical algorithms or computer software before they voted it through. Yay for that victory.

Let's hope that the newly found sanity of the EU patent process spreads.
