I'm seeking employment with a local firm, I really want to gauge how far away I am from making that possible. All constructive criticism is welcomed thank you.
I still want to add some jQuery features to it like a roll over slide on the portfolio images and I want to redo my portfolio to showcase desktop and mobile versions of each design.
the primary use for the site is just to show potential employers I somewhat know what I'm doing but I think I can learn a lot more if I was in an environment with other people doing the same thing. On another note I'm also just trying to scrape a few free lance jobs in on the side. How does this site fare in a potential clients eyes? Would they be impressed or satisfied with my skill set or do I need to keep working on it?
I'm ok with constructive criticism and would really like to know if I'm doing anything wrong so I could fix it.

Thanks, I'm advertising my skills in both areas but more so my coding skills. The objective of the site is to showcase to potential employers rather than freelancing but I think it can accomplish both. In my about section I'm trying to sell my self as I would in a cover letter and it also gives a nice little chart on my modestly self rated skills.

Nice site except for one thing. If you are advertising yourself as a webdesigner, I would improve on the picture in the background. Now it looks too faded or maybe not enough pixels, not clear.
Try a better image busting with color and sharpness. Everything else looks like a good job but thats just my humble opinion.
krome first thanks for your feedback, I agree with you on the quality of the picture, I may need to pay a photographer to get a great skyline shot of my city in high resolution so it could add to the quality of the design. In that sense I completely agree with you. Thanks again for your feed back much appreciated.
Here's a couple of minor things I suggest:
1) On the portfolio page when a user clicks on "Visit this Project", I would have it open up in a new tab. Why? Because, it takes people completely away from your website and if I want to get back to it (so, I can continue to learn about your skills) I need to either retype in your URL or hit the back button a number of times.
2) On your home page under "Recent Work" when a user mouses over each photo another box comes up and when the user clicks on the box it takes them to the top of your portfolio page. Taking users to the top of the portfolio page is a bit confusing. When I clicked on the box I expected it to either take me to a page dedicated to describing the project or to the projects website itself in a new tab. So, when I was taken to the top of your portfolio page I didn't immediately know where I was suppose to go next.
3) I find the background distracts to much from trying to read your website. but, that is just me.
I think it is a mistake to have your self-ratings on the "About" page. You look to be a 4/10 on the PHP scale, that's not making me want to hire you. 4/10 means you know PHP, so put that you know PHP (and only apply for "Entry Level" PHP jobs).
More emphasis is needed on your portfolio, that is the most important info on your site, isn't it?
Make your email address a link.
In the portfolio, make more things links to the project - not just the "Visit this site" link. Make the image a link, make the URL a link.
"My Mom Makes 6 Figures" has no online content? Put up some screenshots in a Fancybox.
I think the "About" page needs more design - it needs to be distinct.
