Job opportunities in web development with only an associate degree?

I'm considering an associate degree in computer studies, with a concentration in internet/web programming. I live in Silicon Valley and I'm currently attending a community college here.

Will I have good job opportunities with this degree? I'm hoping that I can get an entry-level web development job after finishing this major.

In this degree we study:

- .NET
- Intro to PERL CGI
- Javascript to AJAX
- JAVA
- Servlets and JSP
- PHP w/MySQL
- XHTML/CSS

Obviously I don't expect to be a wizard at these languages with only an associate degree, but I'm hoping to be fundamentally sound and proficient enough to land an entry-level web development job.

You live in the perfect place. Silicon Valley equals major $$$. You need to push yourself in this field. Don't just depend on school. Take on projects while at home and just continue to work. Majority of the internet startups take off in Silicon so you need to network. If you work hard, stay focus and are a fast learner it may take you only 2 years to become good.

i think the field you have chosen its really very vast ....so keep going on the path .... you just need to work hard that's all.... and as corneliusw said don't just depend on the school learn from books , article as well as internet . try some tutorials on the internet that will polish your skills . best of luck

I asked this very same question a few months ago. Websites like OLMIS say you need a bachelor's, but the real world suggests otherwise. I'm taking a computer careers class right now, and we just had a guest speaker (a programmer) this week that said about the only place locally (in Oregon) that doesn't hire with an associate's is the city, but the next city over hires with just the 2 year.

The class I've been taking also says that unemployment for programmers is extremely low. In fact the guest speaker said you don't even have to be a great programmer to get a job, you just have to be decent. Obviously, because you live in the Silicon Valley, you may have a tougher job seeking field. Our guest speaker said that locally we can expect to be making $100,000 a year in 5 years with a 2 year degree and hard work.

Always keep up the good work. Definitely yes, you will have a good opportunities after you finished your course.Don't just rely on whatever the schools is teaching you. Explore everything to have a widen up your knowledge.
