WordPress is used by very many many people. WordPress.org itself has millions of members, with a company structure which will pretty easily outscale the size of your own.

The website itself can be locked down pretty easily, and should have no way to interfere with the actual hosting itself - emails/dns settings or otherwise.

Provided you remain on the ball with updates, you should be smooth sailing should WordPress fulfill your requirements.

Best example I can quote is the UK Prime Ministerial site, which uses Wordpress. I imagine the spec for that site had some regard for security considerations...

all you need do is get some shared hosting or preferably a VPS somewhere and point your www record at that, no need to host it yourself if thats a concern, you also probably use Windows internally which is a risk in itself so the less on there the better.

many do (though usually via an IT pro (and for far less than the numbers you quoted unless you get graphic designers involved)) ,

but 50 Person web-designer companies don't normally do their own engineering projects,

and there is a reason for that
