IDE not working properly

Hi,

I am running windoze Me. (sorry )

We had a power cut yesterday as I was copying to my CD re-writer. Since the power returned and I booted up, I cannot get the hard disk and the CD-Rom/CD re-writer to work on two separate IDE sockets. Each socket works but when I plug the CD-s into one IDE and the hard disk into the other, the CD-s don't work. If I plug a hard drive into one IDE and the hard disk from my laptop into the other, they both work and I can copy to nad form each.

When I boot up, the power to the cd's work and the logo in my system tray for the cd rw is there but with the red circle and diagonal red line thru it. I have re-installed the softeware for the cdrw but with no operational success.

I used the install new hardware feature and it says that I have installed successfully the standard dual IDE driver.

I am now stuck and need your help guys.

Any ideas?

Check the jumpers on the drives. It sounds like you've got both drives set to work as the "Master" or "Only" drive, when you put two drives on a single IDE controller one of the drives must be jumpered as master and the other as slave. Double-check the cable you're using too, there's another possible setting called CS for Cable Select and if you've got one of those cables you must set both drives to CS.

sage45 is an unknown quantity at this point
Another thing you can check is this:

Go to Start --> Run --> REGEDIT
Inside of the registry editor, goto:
Code:
\\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Look for Key Names of 'LowerFilters' and 'UpperFilters'

If you find either of these, delete them... Reboot your system...

This has to deal with a setting that was placed into your registry by your CD-RW software... The setting is there for backwards compatibility...

HTH,

Hmm, with my huigely technical knowledge (not), I reckonn we may be talking jumpers. I did the regedit and somehwere in it I saw the confoig for the cdrom where it said "IDE CDROM DISABLED"

iW WAS IN FODLER ISAPNP/AZT3013_DEV0000/FFFFFFFF

I wish I had started wiht the root directory there.

Can anyone remind me of the way to set the jumpers. I very vaguely remember from when installing the cdrw about it telling me about the jumpers but I cant rmember where to set them

Thanks so far
Bazz.

Perhaps I should update you on what I found since earlier today. (before you replied).

When windoze is starting, the whit text on black screen shows that it has found the cd drives and shows the model numbers. just when it has started, they dont function

The jumpers on are the back of the drive next to the IDE connector. There should be a label hopefully on the back of the drive or on the bottom that lists which one is for master, slave, etc.

Yes I recall those switches now, though I doidnt think that the power cut would adjust them

I discovered system restore and tried it. it would only restore it to yesterdays date which luckily was the day the power cut happened. (it just seemed longer ago). Seems to work fine now though the cdrw is a bit slower. I'll look at adjusting its settings later.

Thanks for your input guys

Yeah, but hey I've once had a computer some how have the cable to the HD get partly pulled out and some of the pins bent. Yet the own of the computer repeatedly insisted that they never opened the computer.

If the system restore fixed it, then it could have been a drvier issue, like some how the cdrom.sys that windows uses got damaged.

Hmm I have a brother like that Mine however has been completely in bits and I was surprised to find it worked first time when I put it together again. I had the hassle of the power unit failing and had to lift everything out.

Still, it's working again now - until the next time
