A couple of things that you can do to help maintain your system: run msconfig to maintain your startup programs and also run some scans for viruses, malware, etc using your favorite anti-virus program.
That said, if you have an older computer with an under-powered processor and are attempting to run more contemporary programs, you may continue to run into this problem.
