SLIDER images not showing in IE

I'm using the s3Slider (http://www.serie3.info/s3slider/).

I have two issues which I'm lost on -

1. The images are not showing in IE8 - although the slider text is. FF/Chrome etc is fine.

2. I'm unable to get a true cross fade, allowing one image to merge into another instead of having a momentary pause of background!

Many thanks for any advice.
