.htaccess on Windows NT?

Well... Windows XP as a matter of fact... anyway

I am using the NT version of Apache, for a personal web server (Just to test things out and stuff... I have never had my very own server and its just so fun!

) and I wanted to protect a few folders for different "members" (all me really, just wanted to test :P)

But as far as I know, .htaccess is only for Unix right?

Well is there an equivelent for Apache 1.2.30 - NT? How do I use it?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Doesn't matter. You can use .htaccess.

But why does it say I can't use it on NT in so many places?

Is there parts I can use and parts I cannot use?

because, reading that htaccess page on JK, (I had read it before), it says

I know it dosnt say Apache for Unix, but since it says not NT, I took it for granted that Apache for NT wouldnt work... but I guess I am wrong so cool =)

Also, I was wondering... in the httpd.conf file, I specified an error document (the 404 one), but what this does is that whenever I go to a non-existent page, it redirects me to my "missing.html" page... now I have seen many sites where the error document does not redirect you... more like, it actually turns whatever page you went to (the non-existent one) into an error-document... so if I went to say, "www.my-site.com/nonexistent.html", well, instead of redirecting me to www.my-site.com/myerrorpage.html , it would simply show all the error info ON myerrorpage.html, not taking me anywhere... how do I do this?

Note: After reading a bit, I have learned how you can specify HTML instead of a URL in the htaccess files... and I imagine this is probably how you can do it... =\

You weren't necessarily wrong just mislead.

You can use .htaccess/.htpassword, etc files running apache on windows.

That part of the tutorial should probably be reworded to say "htaccess is an Apache thing, not a Microsoft IIS thing."

Spooter's right (

), it should be re-worded to not differentiate between the OS and instead specify the webserver software...although, running APACHE on NT is kind of like well...I won't even go that far

and yes Food is right.

Apache on windows should never be used for anything other than developing and testing. Too unstable to handle anything more.
