Negative margin in css

I have seen many times people using negative margin in css like
margin-right: -250px;
I searched many times what it exactly does but didn't get it.
Please can anybody explain me?
Thanks in advance

Imagine a positive margin.
Now imagine it going in the opposite direction.

That's all it is.
