IE Issues: Popup box with gap

I'm having some issues with IE and attempting to display a popup box on a hover event. What's weird is the fact that it may relate to background-color. I have a list of icons in the middle of the page. When the user hovers over them, a popup box appears above the list. Each list item has it's own popup box (this is because I will later be adding an arrow at the bottom of the popup which points to the list item it relates to). When the popup container has background-color set (not transparent), it works just fine... but their's no "gap" between the list of icons and the popup. To better illustrate, I made two jFiddle examples

With gap: http://jsfiddle.net/chris7519/rGJ4g/1/

Without gap: http://jsfiddle.net/chris7519/rGJ4g/2/

The only difference is adding a background color to the wrapper.
