What is a good counter to use? I want to count the number of times the home page of a website is viewed?

for your use or you want to display this in a page? also there is a difference between hits and views, most of the tools count the number of hits.
if you have cpanel you probably can use awstat or another tool.

a view implies more requests to the server to load the content, images, what ever is in the page. Each of this request is a hit.
a google search for 'visitors count' give a lot of results, i was looking to this one:

which is good is difficult to say.
