Flash for Web system and interface

Hey guys, need some advise really on a project I am undergoing.

I am currently in the middle of converting an old academic system from a very old .NET system created years ago that is very buggy, I am converting it to a web system on top of MySQL and PHP. Now right now it works just fine and everything is good, for the programmer that is ha ha

But as most of us programmers and web guys know clients don't always like change ha ha. So I am getting a lot of guff on the fact that they don't like the web interface, I have changed many many times and still I get guff ha ha

I have found out and attribute it to the fact that customers don't want change, they like their windows software the way it looks, they love how fast the new system is, but they are addicted to the old look and feel.

So for the next version of the software I was thinking of going the route of making the whole interface in Flash.

Now from my little bit of searching the web I have found that flash can only connect to MySQL through a PHP or ASP script or another type that can send it XML directly. Is this correct? Or is there another way for Flash CS3 to connect to MySQL?

Can, I know this is a stretch but it doesn't hurt to ask, can Flash CS3 through some purchased component connect directly to and parse MySQL??

Now that that's out of the way, what are your opinions on this? Is this a good idea or what other opinions might you give me? I don't really want to go the route of Java, even though it natively connects to MySQL. I would just be a huge load on the server and I don't know if I want to go down that road.

What are some thoughts out there? Would this Flash idea just be more of a headache than it's worth?

Thanks for any advice you can give me.
