question about ruby on rails

Hello,

There is a programming language called PHP. There is a "framework" called Wordpress. It uses PHP and it is very popular.

Is "Ruby on Rails" a framework?

Basically, I'm wondering if Rails is Ruby's equivalent to PHP's Wordpress. Like, you don't really need "Rails" to program in Ruby. It's more like a helper tool rather than a requirement.

Yes Ruby on Rails" is a framework. Like many web frameworks, Ruby on Rails uses the MVC (Model-View-Controller) architecture pattern to organize application programming. Ruby on Rails is separated into various packages, namely ActiveRecord (an object-relational mapping system for database access), Active Resource (provides web services), Action Pack, Active Support and Action Mailer. Prior to version 2.0, Ruby on Rails also included the Action Web Service package that is now replaced by Active Resource. Apart from standard packages, developers can make plugins to extend existing packages.

I would like to learn Ruby on Rails to build my next dynamic website. Firs tof all, tell me please will I regret my choice for any reason? Is there anything related to Ruby on Rails that make it not good choice?

I want to know what should I learn first? My background is only HTML and CSS. Should I learn Ruby language then move to Ruby on Rails Framework or what?

I'm learning Ruby first via Lynda.com tutorial videos and Code Academy. Then, I'm moving onto Ruby on Rails via Lynda.com.

Wordpress is a CMS, built using PHP.
Ruby on Rails is a framework, built using Ruby.

I understand enough to contribute this much.
