Plenty of programs do just fine. PhotoShop. PhotoPaint. GIMP. Fireworks. Use what you're familiar with.

Hello,
The programs I use are: Photoshop (this is a must) and Illustrator. Illustrator has many brushes and very smart tools for creating logos and templates very easy and fast. I usually combine the Illustrator results to Photoshop.

I am kind of interested in this topic too because I want to change the template I was using all the time (it was one I could choose out of a hundred of availables) and create my very own, because now that my side has so much traffic I think it need kind of a fresh change - it has to increase, develop and be better than before.

Clearly you don't need any more input about Photoshop since everyone here recc'ed it but I'm still gonna throw in my 2 cents and say:

Photoshop.

What a shocker.

I've used PhotoShop, PhotoPaint, GIMP, Fireworks and CorelDRAW. Any of them are very capable and can do the job. It's like asking a painter what type of paint they use. You should use what you like the most.
