Flash CS3 masking problem

not sure anyone can help here as there's no code to look at/correct
i'm trying to mask a marquee of text on a project i'm building
basically so that the text shows up in the 'box' that was designed for it
(with the mask covering the 'box')
everything seems to work fine when i manually operate the tween on the timeline but when i execute the project with Ctrl/Enter the marquee doesn't appear at all!
i've gone back over my old CS3 tutorials to see if i'd forgotten something but i'm doing exactly as instructed so why doesn't it show up in the executable??
any ideas/insights i'd be grateful : )
