Saving a word document as...

What do I save a Microsoft Word document as so it looks right when it's opened up through all programs? I saved it as an .rtf and it looks great in Microsoft Word 2003, but on my work computer it's all jacked up.

Is editing capability required? If it isn't, PDF is the way to go. If it is, what exactly is up with a Word 2003 document?
