Should I host now, or wait until sites are finished ?

Hello Folks

I would like a little bit of advice, regarding hosting for a commercial site, well several similar sites really.

I don’t think the first site will be 100% finished for 6-8 weeks, but once the first is complete, the others will follow pretty soon afterwards.

Would you suggest I take out hosting now, even with a simple holding page for each, to give Google a bit of a chance to catch up ?

I understand it takes a few months for search engines to actually ‘see’ a site.

A simple ‘yes, host now’ or ‘wait’ would do, but any reasons would of course be gratefully received and acted upon accordingly.

Regards !

Hello Williebee,
Host now! Why wait? An extra month or two is not going to break the bank.
You will need to test online during development anyway.

auriaks has a little shameless behaviour in the past
I think, that there is no need to do that while the site isn't finished. Money, even small amount, is valuable thing. If you will buy host now, you could try your site, but is it wort that? When you will finish your project, then buy one, because there is possible way, that your website can be hacked while all the system isn't working properly. Also, money is valuable thing. If you have work for few weeks, then you can spend that price, but if there is two months of works, you can spend all that money on your website improvements or advertising later...

You have decision to make. If you want it, just do it.

What would you have to do, work half an hour at minimum wage to pay off the cost of hosting your month?
Testing in a live environment is advisable: usually the public-facing host will not be identical to the local setup, if you have a local setup at all.

The likes of Google and such tend to start indexing fairly quickly, these days. If you add your site through the Webmaster tools panel, you'll usually see initial checks within a few days.

As to your question, I'd personally say yes. Try not to get the software/pages themselves up and available until you know any links and such are going to be in a consistent format and persistent, but getting a base placeholder index up won't hurt.

Wait until the site is completely ready for hosting....Do the on-page work properly and then have a good plan for the off-page technicalities...it'll work.

I would say host now, but only connect via host ip (Don't link up your domain name to the DNS just yet) so it would be http://127.0.0.1/~USERNAME/. This means that people would not be able to directly be able to link into your site, so you would not have to worry about vulnerabilities, but you would be able to see the finished product.

Regards.

Brilliant advice !

I actually learnt about the free hosting company Zymic.com on Monday evening, while attending a course. We were actually uploading our coursework. Several free hosting sites are blocked by the College computer system, but this company is allowed, must be OK then. And the lecturer uses it too.

Yes, I wactually intend doing as you suggest .

Upload the pages, if need be one by one to ask others about the layout, but the wording will just be that Lorem Ipsum stuff, that everybody loves. Yes, and the name will be test1 or something and not www.......

Regards !

ps just read your message.

This is what I do - just a quick gotcha however depending on the host and whether or not the apache is shared you may need to have the dns name in your local /etc/hosts file so that apache knows were to route it.

but as webdes2010 says dont put it on an external DNS until you are ready to share.

Cheers
Graham

Williebee:
First of all, run the site at localhost (or local network machine) to test for any problems. Always have local copy and test on it , before uploading to real site.
Also - register the domain, and put there something, 1-2 pages with your site thematics.
The reason for this is, that google puts new sites in "sandbox" , preventing them from making into search results , for about 4-6months. Thus - the earlier google knows about you - the better it is for your SERPs (search engine result position).
Besides, good domain might be cought before you register it, so just reserve it. And while you have it reserved, do ~3-4$ per month (for a hosting) make a difference? For a commercial project?
Sum it up: Yes, host now.
