PS2 laser and DVDs

Someone once mentioned to me that there is a problem with the PS2 laser when it is used on DVDs alot. Like it will burn out or something just stop working and then I know that the laser is so damn expensive to replace it would be worth buying a new PS2 over replacing. Tell me, is this true? Has anyone had such a problem?

There's loads on PS2 laser calibration and this 'problem'. I'm sceptical; the theory seems to be that the laser isn't optimised for DVD so has to re-read alot, I'm not sure why this would damage the laser tbh as it's a non moving optical component, maybe somone else can shed light on that... though poor reading of the disk would obviously affect playback.

I just want to know if my PS2 is going to crap out due to watching to many DVDs. I haven't ever had a problem watching a movie on the PS2 maybe if there was a smudge or scratch, but other then that, pretty smooth playback.

Same here Jas... I have played a ton of DVD's on my PS2 and have not had one problem...

Just get a 2 year warranty and return it and get another before it runs out. LOL
I've done it once.

but really, one of the reasons i bought my PS2 was to double as a DVD player so i would'nt have to buy both (cheap? yes i am).
I get DVD's as much as i get games, ive never had a problem.

what is this? you bought a new one and returned the old one? Don't they scan the bar code on the back when you return it? Or did you get the 2 yr warenty can keep if for the old PS2? Im now intreagued...

I was simply pointing out the fact that that's what warranties are for, incase something happens to the PS2. And if the quality of the reader goes, then you are perfectly capable of returning your old one for a new one.
My warranty also puts my PS2 money towards a PS3.

Although if its a sound/video problem it could have something to do with your modulator/adaptor, if you have one.

I have no problem, I was wondering about future problems and how to deal with them, since I was notified of this potential problem a while back I thought it might be something that needed to be addressed. Thanks all
