In my opinion, if I was a customer, I wouldn't hire a company to develop a website for me if they have to use wordpress for their home site.

I've owned and operated two different small web developing firms and I developed both sites from scratch (with help with design from a business partner). If you can't develop your own site from scratch, or if you need the help of an open source CMS, then you may need to re-think your business plan because web development might not be the service you want to offer. If you are planning on hiring or contracting out your jobs to freelance/other developers, then I suggest you hire one of them to develop a site for you.

Imagine someone offering building services, however the office he runs his business out of is run-down, falling to pieces. Would you hire that builder to build you a house?

Then again, this is entirely my opinion.

I see your point Rebbu, but on the other hand, these CMS's and frameworks are supposed to make web development easier and more "turn-key", right? So perhaps a living example of a use of Wordpress you can show to your potential clients may be attractive.

Put another way, if the type of web development you offer is CMS customization, what better way to demonstrate your abilities than to use Wordpress to build your own website?

Good point Fumigator, but I assumed he wasn't an expert with WP (and therefore wouldn't offer it as a development service) because he is unsure of the ability of the CMS in the first place.

The content he is requesting can of course be displayed in WP, even a web-developer with little to no experience with WP (like myself) knows this. The CMS is open source, so you can just edit the source code if WP restricts a certain feature that you are wanting.

Or maybe dremay is foreign and has never heard of/used wordpress until recently? Then, like I have just stated, what you are asking is possible.

Regards,
Rebbu

I appreciate your opinion, and fall on the exact opposite side. I develop sites using Joomla, Drupal, Wordpress, and save a lot of time that way. Its simple economics, if I can make a website my clients can use in 30% of the time and at 30% of the cost, I'm a hero.

I used to develop sites from scratch, and I almost quit because 1) it was difficult to maintain multiple websites 2) clients didn't want to pay for the development time and 3) I didn't enjoy reproducing the same things over and over.

I might compare it more to auto manufacturing, as a lot of cars reuse the same parts but still end up being completely different cars. A CMS really is just the framework, and you have the opportunity to customize it to your own needs.

Learning how to develop with a CMS is the same process as learning how to make a custom site. I still write HTML/CSS code, I still write PHP code, I still use a database, its just a lot faster and more reliable now that I know how it all works.

Using a CMS as a crutch is another issue, some people use them like Frontpage was used for so long. Sure they can be abused, but it lowers the skill level required to build sites, and even if you are a dev (like me!) using a CMS it doesn't make you weak. I would argue it makes you stronger, if you take the time to learn the CMS and really develop with it.

Whitehouse.gov runs Drupal by the way, an interesting note.
