Lightbulb Playstation 3

My brother's written an article from the PS3 patent application, describing the patent and theorising on what it could mean in practise. Good stuff

Edit:
Sorry - I had to remove the URL because he told me the article's not finished yet I'll put it back once it is

I am looking foward to reading this article when it is done. I have not heard anything about ps3 except that you can plug it into your brain and control your movements with your eyes.

I wish that Gamecube would release there patent on those mini-disks that hold like 7 times more information than a regular CD.
then we could get somewhere, nintendo aint doing nothing with it.

no matter how advanced the game system could be, im afraid they will hold off on making it "amazing" to make more money first.

It sounds like an interesting architecture, quad core or summit, uses Rambus Inc's Yellowstone memory bus too as I understand it. Defo looking forward to the article.

The Gamecube disk is just a cut-down mini-DVD with the data written backwards as far as I know. No big deal at all.

If I remember correctly, when the PS2 came out they ran ads for the PS9 that was like that, you played the entire game in your head. Then as soon as you were like "cool!" they said "but today you can get the PS2" or whatever.

But a PS2 DVD can hold more because it is fullsized. There's nothing special about the DVD format...

The DVD format sucks, I realised this last night; watching Goodfellas I actually had to turn the disc over half way through Also discs holding huge amounts of data have been created yet for some reason DVD became the standard, it was taken up too soon imo.

True. I remember reading about FMD disks years ago, which can put something like a terrabyte (eventually) onto a DVD-shaped disc.

There's three issues with the terrabyte disks that I know of:

- They require magnitic sheilded lasers for reading, even heavier shielding for writing (too much magnetic interference inside the comp). They require bulky counter-weighting to steady the beam (too much vibrations inside the comp). In short, the readers are still too big for the 5" slots a regular CD/DVD drive use.

- They have not managed to create a bulk-production facility for them like they have for DVD's - you have to write to them one at a time.

- They are very not-cheap, as they use metal (titan/aluminium/tungsten alloys) instead of plastic.

I just hope it's quicker in loading and memory access than PS2. Trying to play Vice City is a real pain in the backside when you have to wait minutes on end just to go in/out of buildings and the like. Maybe a small hard disk will be used so internet browsing and saving games will be possible (without those pap memory cards).

That's not really necessary, I don't think - there's a PS2 game called Jak & Daxter, which never says 'loading ...' - it loads asynchronously while the game is playing. Maybe that's a RAM issue.
