@ - what is it's functionality???

so, you can add an @ before functions such as mysql_fetch_array etc, and I was just curious as to it's exact functionality??

met has a little shameless behaviour in the past
suppresses any error messages

not useful for developing, somewhat useful for deployed scripts assuming you handle errors yourself
