Question software for offering free online email?

Hi all,

I'm interested in setting up a mail server so I can offer a hotmail-like website. Does anyone know of what kind of software I would need to start? The less complex the better as this will be a new project for me.

Is it hard to set something like this up? Anyone know of a good site to learn about the process?

thanks in advance

Well you'll need a smtp server, I think Linux comes with one and you can install php and have a nice little mail website. ( I think, haven't looked @ php popmail functions yet)

Try googling for more info.. http://www.google.com

Thanks for your comments. I think im just too impatient to figure it out because it seems to get more and more confusing as I go. Everytime I find a site with some useful info it assumes you already know this or that which i don't! haha

Does anyone know of a site that walks you though the creation of a mail server? I haven't had much luck on my own.

I did, however find a pretty viable free service that provides email to your visitors via @yoursite.com if anyone is interested (including me haha)

Thanks again
