Welcome to the "Web Projects" forums. Before you post, make sure you've selected the correct category based on the size of your project (in US dollars), or whether it is a partnership or "looking for work" request instead. Observe the guidelines for this section:
To all thread starters, check your "pm" box for responses, as that's how bidders will be communicating with you mainly using. You can turn on new pm notification by going to "User CP"-> "Edit Options"-> "Receive Email Notification of New Private Messages".
To respondents, avoid replying to a thread with a short generic response like "pm sent" as much as possible. It is pointless and clutters up the screen.
To respondents, don't reply to a work request with a summary of your resume. If you're not willing to spend the time to at least read the request and respond specifically to the request, then don't reply. The Web Projects forum isn't a place to get your resume/ portfolio posted on as many threads as possible, it's for the direct, human interaction between coder and client. Members who blanket the forums with their resume replies will be treated as spammers and banned.
To all thread starters, please update your thread's prefix to "resolved", when you've found a coder for your project or partnership (or wish to terminate the request). This is so coders don't waste time bidding on an invalid project. To do this, click on the "Edit" button under the first post of the thread, then the "Go Advanced" button. You have 14 days to update your thread's title.
1) Project Details: (be as specific as possible):
I am looking for someone who can make me a nice background that would compliment my site. What I would like to see in it is a gaming theme, preferbly with some characters/things from stacraft 2, crysis, halo, and/or hawx. I am planning on having the background fixed while scrolling, and non repeating. For those of you without the firefox addon to view website info, the main screen that will cover up the background is centered and roughly 765px wide. Plan to have images only on sides, none on top/bottom because the page will elongate vertically, which may cover up any images you put there. Specifically, I like the background one on this site, and how the game characters are visible on the sides of the main div block.
2) Payment Amount:
$25 for a good job, more for an exceptional job
3) Payment method/ details (Paypal, check? Timeline?):
Paypal, 10 up front and the rest once done
4) Additional Info (about project or potential bidders):
I know I am new to this site, but I know what I am doing and I am serious about this. If the price is not what the normal price is, I will consider changing it.
Also, I am looking for a banner, so if you can do that I'd pay extra.
PM me all offers.

Reason: security thing
I was about to help you out, but when you said if you don't like it, you won't pay. I refuse to help you.
What you need to do is ask a player for past artwork, and if you like their skill, hire them. If you don't, look for someone else. Don't expect them to spend hours of show you a background and you decide no thanks.

so you want me to pay you if you put no effort into it and do a **** job because you are guaranteed pay? All I want is security that my money wont go to waste.
I'm sorry, but $25 for work is already very very low, about half an hour for a professional's time, which would be spent just emailing about the details.
Also seasoned designers stay away from projects who
1) underestimate the costs
2) pay only when work is accepted (as in if they don't like it, they don't get paid)
To be honest I would never pick up a project like this, even for a larger sum, because what is to stop you from saying you don't like it, not pay, and then use it anyways? Of course I always keep things or put some kind of branding on it until it has been paid, but even so, the lost time which might not be paid is not worth the chance.

Well $25.00 is a **** price but a bit of time out of your busy schedule to do something you enjoy is worth it. I see people doing some art work and graphic media for free because its what they enjoy. Getting paid for it is a bonus. its like an artwork. If u paint something and take it to an exhibition and its not liked and therefore not sold you wasted your time. But if it is you get the benefits. So $25.00 is good for an extra 2-3 hours of something u enjoy. So stop winging all the time about this and that and actually be an artist and do it for the " i created that fine piece of art" and not for the "that will be $460usd before i even touch the mouse or pencil( Depending on if you are a graphics designer or do all the desing by hand)
Artists != designers. Designers work for a price, no matter what spin you put on it. You think the Mona Lisa was painted for free? It was commissioned long before.
Anyway, the issue is with possible theft of work, and effort wasted if they don't like it. If you don't like the food served to you, you still have to pay. Maybe negotiate a refund, but you still have to pay.

In response to both of you:
1. I have agreed with the point that I should pay some before the person starts, and I am paying 10 ish up front (will talk to whoever is interested)
2. If someone wanted more $$ because they felt that they would put a lot of effort into it and 25 doesn't seem fair that is fine. I will pay more if the person shows me some of their previous work and we agree 25 is not enough.
I am not unreasonable, you guys just jump to conclusions and make assumptions that are not true.
I hope some artists out there realize that I will pay fairly for some nice work, and I am open to negotiate.
Also, the post about how some artists do artwork for free, and $$ is a bonus, I agree and like that point. There are plenty of people who do good work for free, but I want to get that + more by paying some.
You guys need to read posts before jumping on the guy, he clearly says he will pay 25 or more if it is exceptional. Which shows that there is room for negotiation, also he says he's new to the site so is unsure about costs, and if the price isnt a normal price he will consider changing it.
Give the guy a break, he already agreed to paying a deposit, if you want more money the negotiate with him.
Thats why I dont go over there anymore, some of the services people are offering at incredibly low prices. Cant and dont want to compete with that!
I would presume the quality of work they provide is as low as their prices. I quit using online bidding systems, because I've found many bid really low. Reasons I've seen include: 1) they work in a country where they can charge less, or don't pay their employees well 2) they have a stash of projects they pull out and just reuse the same things for each client or 3) they steal from others.
The crisis has nothing to do with this. I have more work now than before it. Figure that out?
I wanted to point out that when one is not paying more than $100, that it is rather silly to hold out on the payment. I know most service providers (including myself) have a policy where if the amount is less than a certain amount (often $500) they require it all upfront. So since this is only $25 total and most of it is only payable if you like it, you will have trouble attracting a designer. The least you could do is ask for example items from the person to see if you like their style, and then offer to give them the whole lot up front rather than holding out on payment.
