I recently designed a website located at http://www.permacastwalls.com. The client is understandably upset that it's not coming up on any search engines.
I read a dozen articles about SEO, and I feel like I've done everything they recommend. I also went through all of Google's Dashboard stuff. It has no problem crawling or indexing the page, and I submitted a Sitemap. What does concern me is that the list of keywords Googlebot is picking doesn't seem that relevent. For example, the street address and LLC appear pretty high up, which makes sense because they are in the footer on every page, but that's not very desirable. I'd like for Googlebot to grab some more likely search terms, but I don't really know what to do about it.
The only thing I know of that's a problem is that there are no incoming links to the site. I've asked the client for some professional organizations or local directories, but he hasn't provided me with any, and I haven't found anything (free) online.
I'd really appreciate some help, because I'm out of ideas.
It can take time for goggle to fully index you. The only suggestion I can make, which you haven;t already covered, is witrh regard to your meta tags. afaik, they should each be separated by commas. else, they form one keyword phrase, I think.

Search engine crawlers are trying to correlate keywords found inside your meta tags, with the exact keywords found inside your main content.
Therefore, when you define a specific meta keyword in your document, then you need to place this keyword inside your content as many times as you physically can, in order for google or any other engine, to track you down and see your page at top results.
There is no point having lots of keywords in your meta tags, where at the same time these keywords are not repeated in your main content. Finally there is a limit on the number of 'keywords' and size of 'description' at your meta tags. Dont exceed the limit, cause some engines can penaltise your site. I hope this helps.
Hate to break this to you, but Meta keywords aren't even indexed by Google (that is; they're completely ignored) and have no impact whatsoever on your ranking performance.
You've identified one big issue, namely the lack of links, but unfortunately good links don't come for free - you have to work at them, or pay someone to do so.
There is plently you can still do with the site though. For example, let's look at the <title> of your homepage here. What are you trying to rank for? Based on the title you've given the page, it looks like you're trying to rank for "permacast walls" (to me and to search engines). Well, you do, in position #1 at the time of writing (http://www.google.com/search?q=permacast+walls&gl=us).
Unfortunately nobody searches for "permacast walls" and to be honest if they do you'll probably rank for that based on the fact that your domain matches what the person searched for. On the other hand, hundreds of people search for "precast concrete walls", so that's probably a good place to focus. Your page only mentions that phrase once, and not in any key areas such as headings or the title. There's several quick fixes right there.
I'm not going to promise you that changing your page will get you where you want to go. The sites that rank on page 1 for that term almost certainly have links that you don't. But it's a start, and by doing some research you should be able to find many keyword niches that do have traffic but where the competiton is weak or non existent, where creating or editing pages to target specific keywords will work wonders for you.
For links, I'd suggest you (or your client, since I doubt this is really your remit) start working your way through some directory submissions from a site that lists free directories such as http://info.vilesilencer.com. It's a time consuming task but for low level stuff such as this, should be all you need if you do enough of them.

Your meta keywords should also have the keyword phrase that you need to rank for. And to me the biggest part here is the Backlinks. And you might need backlinks from high PR sites so that you can be on the top of the SERP for organic searches. It can be as simple as a profile from Google here http://www.google.com/profiles/ and give a link inside the Bio box.
And you have to look at the competition, some keywords are just about impossible to break through. Think about the keyword 'music', who is going to rule that? Major companies who can throw a lot of money into that placement. That is important to keep in mind when trying to determine which keywords to be top for.
Honestly nobody really knows how they index, because they always change their algorithms to prevent someone from taking advantage of the system. So don't ignore meta tags, but don't overestimate their value. Basically the best rule of thumb is to make quality content that reflects the purpose, and it also takes a little time to get indexed. Expecting results within a month is often unrealistic, its 2-3 months before significant changes can be seen in many cases. New sites are usually weighted down because they are new, so ask for patience. And if they are really upset about placement, its probably not your field of expertise and you should recommend them going to an SEO firm to help with that. Its really a specialized field, and I refer my clients when they want major search engine results, as I can't keep up with it as a developer (nor do I find it interesting).
